Today I had my first Riesling from Slovenia. Again from Kupljen in Jeruzalem. Alongside this personal novelty I had a couple of Emrich-Schönleber Rieslings 2009 from Nahe region in Germany. Let’s see how the Renski Rizling will put up a good show against the classics.
Kupljen Renski Rizling Selection Mon Royal 2009, Jeruzalem-Svetinje
This Riesling from Cerovec Block in Jeruzalem (Slovenian Syria) was more of an expressive Wachau style Riesling with plenty of fruit, strength and not all too acidic (but well balanced). Its colour was lusciously bright yellow. The nose appeared to have plenty of fruitful scents. I spotted some red ripe apples, some grapefruit, mild lemon and some certain spiciness from green herbs. Indeed a rather typical Riesling bouquet. The taste was rather fruitful, too. Not so much to describe, really. More or less the same. I got flavours of some apples, hints of peach, some tropical aromas of pineapple and mango. Hang on, the last flavours were something new. At least! Later I got a bit more creaminess and hints of petrol. Well, what else to mention. I guess it wasn’t an overwhelmingly mineral Riesling, neither all too complicated nor extensively profound. Surly not boring! Very harmonious, balanced and enjoyable Riesling for less than 10 Euros. Fine!
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Riesling Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen 2009, Nahe
Pretty bright yellow-white colour. Its nose was rather lean, clear and classic. I got scents of white peach, lemon, hints of apricot and a bit of lemon detergent. The flavours were rather precise, clear and typical for a Frühlingsplätzchen Riesling from Emrich-Schönleber. I got flavours of apricots, white peach and white flower tea. A very fruitful, not all to profoundly mineral Riesling, with very nice balance and convincing concentration. Might have been the most enjoyable Riesling of the evening! Still a bit of potential left in the bottle. So, no rush required! It is still a teenager!

Its colour wasn’t as bright as the Frühlingsplätzchen. More yellow with hints of green’ish reflexes. The nose was very exotic and slightly tart. I got concentrated scents of tropical fruits like pine-apple, not all too ripe mango and some guava. Besides that hints of candied orange and here and there some peach. Its taste appeared to be rather powerful for a mid-range Riesling. It was very lush and fruitful (pine-apple, mango, other yellow fruits and some green herbs), showed a strong mineral backbone, was deep and broad at the same time, had quite a lot of cream and showed plenty of potential for the near future. Too young for sure! I might call it a pre-teen.

Well, what can I tell you about this one right now? To be honest – not a lot. Right now this GG is in kindergarten doing a nice little nap. Its colour was very bright and juvenile. I got very modest and reserved smells of petrol, smoke, vanilla and hints of yellow indefinable fruits. The taste presented itself very sleepy. I got a lot of concentration and assumed muscles, not a lot of complexity right now, not so much obvious acid and only scattered flavours of fruits. I see plenty of potential in the long-run, at least (*****), but right now it is very absent. Don’t open it, please!
